In November and December, 2023, the leaders of our school went to Japan and the U.K for work visit. Liu Huiping, the secretary of the Party Committee and Wangshun, the Deputy Dean delivered speeches of recommending the school in the sub-forum of East Lake Forum in Japan and Cambridge, as well as communicating with the youth scholars. Deputy Dean Wang signed the joint training contract with the University of Manchester, while also expanded the in-depth communication about the topic of talent joint training communication and high-quality scientific research collaboration with the University of York, the University of Glasgow, Imperial College London and etc.
From November 25thto 29th,2023, Liu Huiping, the secretary of the Party Committee went to Japan to attend The Twentieth International Youth Scholars East Lake Forum·Japan Sub-Forum. The Japan Sub-Forum was divided into two parts of Tokyo and Osaka, attracting over 200 scholars to register and follow, and later over 150 prominent scholars were invited by the universityto join the forum.
In the process of recommending the discipline, Liu gave an overview of the School of Physics in terms of its development history, construction of disciplines and platforms, and construction of talents teams. During the communication part, Liu introduced the allocation of resources and supporting policies for talents, received a detailed understanding of young scholars' personal situations, and helped young scholars to analyze the growth path, encouraging them to come back to China for work or participate inthe East Lake Sub-Forumon line to achieve in-depth exchanges with our school's professors through delivering academic reports.
From December 3rd to 12th,Wangshun, the Deputy Dean and Professor Liu Huafeng and the group visited the School of Physics of the University of Manchester, the University of Glasgow, the University of York, Imperial College London and other universities, and expanded the in-depth communication about talent joint training communication and high-quality scientific research collaboration. In the meantime, our school took part in the recommendations among schools in the East Lake Forum·Cambridge Sub-Forum.
In the University of Manchester, our school leaders expanded the communication with their Department of Physics and Astronomy, visited their laboratories and renewed the 2+2 undergraduate joint training agreement with them.
During the communication, Wang reviewed the results of the five-year-long cooperation and deep friendship between us. He said, since the joint training agreementsighed in 2018, 6 students had been sent to the University of Manchester for joint training, Luo Yutong, an undergraduate student of Grade 2017, won The University of Manchester Outstanding Academic Achievement Award during the stay (only 40 students out of nearly 6,500 undergraduates could get the award every year), and Tang Yue, a student of Grade 18 Yan Jizhi Excellence Class, wonThe Walter Grattidge Prize during the stay. After graduation, these students went to Oxford, Imperial College of Science and Technology and the University of Manchester for pursuing master's and doctoral degrees respectively.
The warden of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester, Professor Stefan Soldner-Remboldwelcomed our visit. He pointed that renewing the 2+2 undergraduate joint training agreement was a full recognition of past cooperation, and hoped that the the School of Physics of HUST would continue to sent prominent students to Manchester for communication; The two schools held the joint seminar in the fields of astrophysics and particle physics in 2021, and looked forward to expanding the seminars in the field of physics in the future.Remboldwished to carry out cooperative seminars more frequentlyand in a wider range of fields in the future. In the subsequent discussion, both sides had more in-depth discussions on the opportunities of cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities, other forms of joint training such as "2+2+1", the selection process and training mechanism of joint students, and the cooperation and exchange in the field of scientific research.
During the school recommending activity in East Lake Forum·Cambridge Sub-Forum, Wang emphasized the three national standard platforms: the Precision Measurement Physics, Gravitational Wave Physics and Astrophysics, Strong Field Ultrafast Optics, High Magnetic Field Physics and Quantum Science, as well as the two cross-disciplinary directions of Life and Health and Future Energy; furthermore, he emphasized the healthy academic ecology of the institute which is "not counting the papers orthe fundings, but focusing on the effectiveness of educating the students and the contribution to the sciences". After the seminar, Wang and Liu had a close communication with the young scholars.
During the conference with the University of Glasgow and the University of York,Dean Wang, Heads Ireland and Gibsonintroduced the development history of the Schools and the achievements in talent training, scientific research, and faculty building respectively. All the sides agreed that the joint training has achieved remarkable results, and expected to take this experience as a basis for further exploring joint training programs with the University of Glasgow and the University of York. In the discussionpart, the three sidesdiscussed the details of the curriculum system, tuition fees, selection criteria and other details during the joint training period. After the meeting, our college leaders visited the laboratories and exchanged views with scholars in related fields on research cooperation.
In the past two years, our school has been exploring the mode of "going out" and "inviting in". We have invited scholars from internationally famous universities, including Ulm University in Germany, the Gravitational Physics Institute of the Max Planck Society, Technische Universität Dresden, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, the University of Texas, and the University of Western Australia in Australia, etc.,to lecturer, and have organized the courses quantum information theory (2022), gravitational waves (2022), gravitational waves (2022) and condensed matter as well as statistical physics (2023); expanding the circle of international partners, discussing with Queen Mary University of London, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Duke University on joint training programs, and promoting the international talent training programs, including the N+N joint training program and the short-term training program for summer and winter vacations. Since 2010, the schoolhas invited Nobel Laureate in Physics to give lectures for many times, which was once interrupted after the pandemic. In 2023,our school restarted the Master Lecture Hall, and invited Nobel Laureate in Physics Prof. Giorgio Parisi to giveonline lectures, and deepened its cultivation of Lecture Hall for Learning, Lecture Hall for Objects,Lecture Hall for Learning, and Lecture Hall for the Creative World. In addition, the school has been deeply cultivating a number of high-level academic lecture halls, such asLecture Hall of Learning,Forum on Physics, andYujiashan Lecture Theatre, etc., and has organized more than 40 lectures at the college level throughout the year, which created a strong academic atmosphere for physics.
