The School of Physics was established in 2008, which was originated from a small department of physics of Huazhong Institute of Technology in 1983.
For years, through elaborate organization and persisting constructions, the school has been dedicating itself to dealing with the challenges of "difficult for others, hard in the short-term, impossible for individuals". Our staff members pioneer the spirit of “exploring the truth with innovation, striving for self-confidence and self-improvement”. With the distinct research directions, our school has made a great influence both domestically and internationally. The physics discipline was rated A- in the fourth round of the national discipline evaluation, ranking the seventh among Chinese universities, and was selected into the first-class discipline under the national "Double First-Class" Initiative. In 2019, our school was approved to be the National First-class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Point (also known as the Double Ten Thousand Plan). In 2020, the discipline of physics was selected into Strong Foundation Program issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
At present, the school has a faculty team consisting of 150 full-time teachers, including 65 professors, 68 associate professors, 17 lecturers and over 30 postdoctors. 68 percents of the teachers are under 45 years old, making the school young and energetic. The ratio of teachers to students is 1 to 5, ensuring an outstanding academic guidance. About 30 percents of the teachers are nationally high-level talents, including 3 members of the National Academy of Science(including double-employed academicians), 3 Yangtze-Professors, 7 with the NSF Distinguished Young Scholarship, 1 selected into the Ten-thousand Talents Program, and 23 selected into the National Young-Talents Program. Since 2014, more than 60 young scholars have been recruited by the school to promote the discipline construction in the developing stage. In the past 5 years, the school was awarded with more than 170 national research grants (~1.4 billion RMB), and published 39 papers in Physical Review Letters, 4 papers in Nature/Science, 14 series in Nature, and hundreds of papers in other prestigious journals.
The school strives to be a cradle for the future scientists, thereby committing to cultivate outstanding and innovative talents with a broad and solid foundation of physical theories, excellent comprehensive qualities and good skills of research in the field of physics as well as in interdisciplinary fields. Two basic courses are provided for undergraduates including Physics and Applied Physics. Besides, the school has the qualification of granting master and PhD's degree of physics(contains theoretical physics, optics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, radio physics, atomic and molecular physics, material physics and precision measurement and etc.). The school offers three experimental classes with all-around guidance to help students develop personalization and internationalization ability through the form of small-size classes.
The international impact of our school is expanding fastly. It is professional and with high-standard physics laboratories including Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics, and the Facility of National Precise Gravity Measurement. They strongly support the research of AMO, condensed matter physics, precision measurement, fundamental theoretical physics and test of fundamental physical laws, geophysics and etc. The scientific researchers from the Facility of National Precise Gravity Measurement were measured out the most precise Gravitational Constant G in the world, which has been written into the textbook of China’s middle schools and developed the first high-precision quantum gravimeter in China. The facility was praised as the "Gravity Center of the World" by the international counterparts. Supported by 3 national scientific research platforms, we built MOE Key Laboratory of Fundamental Quantities Measurement and Hubei Key Laboratory of Gravitation and Quantum Physics. We own the Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering of HUST as well as the Department of Astronomy, realizing the balanced and integrated development of physics. We have established 15 research groups consisting of full-time faculty members and PhD students. Every research group has a principal investigator (PI) responsible for the scientific research and student education of the group. The PI must be a full-time professor and has already been responsible for cultivating several graduate students with high quality. The group members can be from other universities overall in the world.
