In the afternoon of October 6th, the 1st HUST-UoM Joint Symposium was successfully held online. Hosted by Doctor Xia Guoxing of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester (UoM), the symposium's attendees included Gary Fuller, the professor of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of UoM, Toby Overton, the doctoral student of UoM. The representatives of our school are as followed: Deputy Dean Cai Jianming and Wu Qingwen; Zheng Xiaoping, the director of the Department of Astronomy of HUST; Professor Jumpei Takata, Associate Professor. Wang Yan, Associate Professor. Qin Qin, the doctoral student Liu Yu; more than 50 people participated in the online discussion.
Professor Fuller and Professor Cai gave an introduction to both schools and departments, detailed introducing the student training, faculty team and scientific research achievements and other aspects.
Professor Fuller pointed that the study of Physics at UoM has a history of more than 150 years. Nurturing massive outstanding scholars, including three Noble Prize winners, the department was ranked as the 9th among national universities and the 1st in Europe according to the 2018 QS World University Rankings. The research focus of the department was on the particle physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, biophysics and theoretical physics and it was equipped with several scientific centers and institutes, including the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics.
Professor Cai elaborated on recent development of the School of Physics at HUST. He refered that the school has introduced a large number of high-level young teachers at home and abroad in recent years, and more than half of them were under 40 years old. Nowadays, the School of Physics has three National Laboratories which strongly supported the research of gravitational physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, high magnetic physics, ultrafast optics, quantum optic science, biophysics, particle physics, plasma physics, enabling them to develop fastly. The Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering of HUST which was established in early 2021, integrated the research strength and resources of HUST to form a collaborative innovation platform for interdisciplinary learning in the field of quantum science.
The topics of the symposium concentrated on astrophysics and particle physics. On the topic of astrophysics, Professor Fuller gave a report entitled as "From Cloud to Pulse: Tracing the Evolution of Massive Stars", Professor Takata introduced "Research on White Dwarf Binary System" and Doctoral Student Liu gave the presentation of "Binary Black Hole merging with Large Economy and Orbital Precision". On the topic of particle physics, Associate Professor Qin made a speech themed on "Rare Inclusive B Decays in the Belle II era", Doctor Xia gave a presentation titled as "Advanced Wakefield Experiment at CER" and Doctoral Student Overton did the report titled as "Dielectric Wakefield Accelerator at Daresbury Lab".
At the end of the symposium, both sides conducted an in-depth discussion about future joint seminars, scientific cooperation and student exchange programs. Professor Fuller and Doctor Xia pointed that the 2+2 undergraduate exchange program between HUST and UoM laid a solid foundation for both sides, and that UoM were looking forward to receiving more excellent HUST undergraduates. Professor Cai and Associate Professor Wang hoped both sides could expand their discussion and carry out more frequent and extensive cooperative activities in the future.
